Question:

How to make a double boiler with pots and bowls?

I am making a coconut cake for Thanksgiving. The recipe for the frosting requires a double boiler, I went out looking for one today and NOBODY had one. =( I have heard you can make one using two pots but how does that work? Is it okay to use a glass bowl on top of a small pot? Please give me some help here! It's greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Answer:

Just find a bowl that fits inside a pot so it is above the water- you want steam hitting the bottom of the bowl not water. Glass would work but metal might be better. Just be sure your hot glass bowl doesn't touch anything cold or you may have a kitchen bomb. I speak from experience- you want to be careful. Hope that helps.

As long as it is a heat proof glass you can use that, otherwise use a metal bowl or another pot that will either sit on the pot, or partway down, but not touching the water. H-man
heyy.you can use a pot and a bowl.pot to boil d water and bow to keep on top of the pot should be bigger and should not touch the water in d pot.when the water boils, eighter turn off the range or on slow fire bcoz the steam is enough to cook d mixture..if d water is boilin continuesly u wil end up over cooking d mixture.and also keep stiring d mixture in d doube boiler. double boiler is done to cook certain foods which cannot bear direct heat.this may make it lose the texture. hope dis was hellpfull
You can make a double boiler out of 2 pots or a pot and a heat rated glass bowl. Chances are though, you don't have 2 pots that fit tightly inside of each other, so best bet is glass bowl, or stainless bowl. Depending upon how big a bowl you need for your recipe.. Pit the appropriate sized bowl, then find a pot that is deeper, and small enough in diameter that it will support the bowl inside of it, without it touch the bottom of the pot. You want at least 1 inch of water in pot without it touching the bowl. You will bring water up to a good simmer, then insert bowl to make a snug fit around the rim of the pot (in other words, don't use a warped pot or warped bowl, you want it to act as a lid for the pot to retain the steam) Good Luck
