Question:

How to make wood look like sword metal?

I'm going to make a sword for my cosplay, of course i cant make the whole thing with stainless steel so i'll make it with woodSo should i use spray-paint, paint it myself or is there any other way? Thanks!

Answer:

Don't use aluminum foil, it will just look tackyFirst shape the wood and then wet-sand itWet the entire thing with a damp rag, let it dry, then sand it again with 320 gritNow go to an auto body store and buy a couple cans of scratch filler primerSpray the sword twice letting it dry in between coats, then sand it down with 320 grit until you can see the wood in the high spots in the grain, spray it twice again, and sand it down againBy now it should be perfectly smoothSpray one more nice coat of primer and let it dryYou're done if you can't tell its made of wood when you look at it in bright lightNow use a high quality metallic spray paintKrylon makes a line of themthey have a funny shaped top and sell for about $7 eachI've had good results with thoseKeep in mind that it will ding and dent easilyYou can always re-spray it if it starts to look wornJust remember to sand lightly and spray the entire bladeMetallic paints can't really be touched up, the shiny stuff doesn't orient the same way and it will be noticeable.
