Question:

how to work with hard plastics?

as sandpaper is for wood, what is it for plastic? i want to make a piece of plastic stick or a plastic table leg for instance slimmer, what do i use for that? coz if i use sandpaper, it would destroy that shiny appearance. could we paint over that? i want it back to brand new again.

Answer:

The problem with plastics is that they tend to melt, stick to the tool and leave fibres. They donot behave like metals because of their poor thermal properties. The heat of mechanical working itself tends to damage the surface. You can work plastics easily if you chill them. Even chillng with ice water will help. Use water emery paper, stop frequently to chill the material, finish off with a fine emery. Acrylic paint spray cans can be used to give a fine glossy finish.
Perhaps a blowtorch. Oh, and that's what she said.
