This is a really vague question. There is evidence that iron was used in early Egyptian history. There is also evidence in the book of exile in the Bible that iron was commonly used. The iron age dates back to about 1300 B.C. Since it was discovered so long ago, we can't really determine HOW it was discovered, but we can say the following: The bronze age preceded the iron age. Bronze requires both copper and tin to be made. As tin became more rare, people searched for alternatives. Since iron requires a higher temperature to be properly smelted, iron developed with an advance in smelting techniques. In a chemical context, your best bet is to say that it took a VERY HIGH temperature to refine iron from iron ore.
