mel chris shelby hvac - heating, VENTILATION, air conditioningthe folk you see with their roof vents covered with a trash bag in cold climates are creating this humid condition ice cycles form on the roof deck raftersthey melt when it warmsyou need all the ventilation you can get! Once the heat has exited ( slowed down by insulation ) it is useless to try to heat your attic It's either this or a roof leak.
I read roblings ansvery complete.Ice dams are formed low usually not higher than 3ft above the gutters.the challenge you describe is from to much condensation.Do you have a lot of plants? How Many people and animals live in your house?Any fish tanks? Is there a shower upstairs?Make sure it is vented properly.I can not stress enough a new roof won't fix problemYour situation is very serious you need to worry about mold and I've seen personally what you describe rot rafters and plywood per ventilation is what is needed.
It could be the snow melting and the resulting water leaking into your attic - so it might be an actual leak (or multiple leaks) as opposed to a condensation problemStyrofoam won't absorb the water/moisture, but buckets or a tarp might at least stop it from damaging the attic flooringIf you think it is for sure just condensation, a dehumidifier might help temporarily.
I have the same problem here (NE area)I've added insulation, increased sofit vents, added ridge vents, bathroom vent is vented outside, sealed all bypassesStill I have an even dampness throughout the attic in the winterI'm thinking It's more the location I'm in thats causing the problem rather than the living space humidity (witch is normal)I have vinyl siding and I have to wash it every couple years due to green moss growing on certain areas of the houseYou might just be living in a damp location (Lots of tall pine trees around my house)Good luck with it, I'm still working on my problem for 3 years nowLet me know If you ever find a solution.
