I have it all disconnected and out of the unit. I am having trouble getting the blades off of the rusted shaft. (two rusted set screws) Any tricks out there on how to loosen them without damage to set screws? Any other advice would also be helpful...first time at this.
i use liquid wrench, let them soak and give a more than a little tap, but not a real hard smack with a hammer, just several sharp raps. this helps to splash out the first layer of softened rust and aids the second application to more readily penetrate. hope this helps
ive done alot of them and they are not any fun. I like pb blaster to spray on them and let them set for a bit then give it a try
You might need a blower wheel motor puller, it's similar to a gear puller. Just don't hit the end of the motor shaft or it will mushroom it. Soak it in oil to loosen it. You know what the best thing for that is? break fluid for cars. It will loosen anything but don't get it on paint, it will strip paint off.
If okorder . No matter what you decide to use, you may have to be patient and let it soak overnight. If the fan blades are badly rusted to the shaft, you Will need a puller, otherwise you will trash everything. One more option to get the blades off without damage is to cut the shaft (behind the fan blade) with a hack saw, then carefully set the hub (set-screw portion) of the fan blade assembly up against a large deep-well socket
if you get the set screws loose i have found that cleaning the shaft below the blade(it usually isnt rusted there) then drive the blade down a bit then clean the rusted part of the shaft and the blade wil usually come off. you can use a crescent wrench and put it across the flat part of the shaft to hold it from spinning and you can usually turn the blade to loosen it up. a lot of the time it is better to just buy a new blade and forget the hassel. a new blade is cheaper that the labor in most cases
