i built a pair of cubed 2x4 tables,can i use cement board on top?then tile?
depends on what you made them out of. are they strong enough to support the board and tile? if you made them out of kleenex then no. but out of wrought iron, then probably you're ok.
Yes, HomeDepot says you can. They say to treat it with cement backerboard first and then apply your tile over it. This is for an outdoor one, but it should be the same as the indoor tables. Make sure you use Backer-On screws to screw to the Hardiebacker CBU down onto the plywood. If you use reg. drywall screws they will rust and not stick.
With mastic cement you can stick tiles right to a wood surface providing it's flat. I used 6 floor tiles with mastic on cabinet grade plywood for our kitchen. It's lasted 17 years now. Mastic comes in plastic containers already mixed......you just trowel it on and stick your tile.
