Question:

Where can I buy an aluminum oil bath that sits on a hot plate?

I can't seem to find a normal aluminum oil bath to use in my chemistry labsomeone please show me the way

Answer:

put them in a tupperware container, and put the container in a bag.
Put them in a medium or large plastic containerPerhaps a plastic cake carrierThen to display them, put them on a cupcake standYou might find one at Walmart, or Michael s.
Whatever you put them in, do not put them in shoe boxesUse some tupperware, go to the dollar store and find a foil pan, maybe 9x13 with a lid.
Tupperware works wellIf you put the Tupperware in a plastic bag just incase it was to break open then it is confined in the plastic bagThat should work perfectly!
Hi Adam: Why do you want to use an aluminum oil bath and not just a simple glass dish? If you have a stirrer hotplate you probably won't be able to stir if you are using an Al oil bathI ran a research lab for 30 years and for our routine work we always used oil baths made of glassOur reaction vessels were, however, usually small (4-5 cm in diameter: Schlenk or modified Carius tubes) and would fit into a beaker with oilFor bigger vessels we used something like a petri dish only deeper (couldn't find an example on www)You have a thermometer in the oil to get the T of the rxn; can have a thermostatically controlled heaterYou can use cheap nujol oil (hydrocarbon) for temps up to ~160 deg CWe however used silicone oil (-SiR-O-SiR-) more expensive but doesn't really decompose even at 220 deg C (the max T for our rxns)And of course you can see your rxn if you use a glass heating bathhope this helpsCheers, drp
