Is it legit? Do you mean, is it legal for him to fire you? It depends on what sort of employment contract you have with them. In most cases, the contract is terminate at will. Either side can terminate the relationship for any reason (though in practice, they cannot terminate for reasons of discrimination). Yes, being late could be considered a valid reason for firing you. However, if others have been similarly late and were not fired, you could have grounds for suit, but I don't think you'll get anywhere. If you legitimately made a mistake, then that would be my argument: I made a mistake. We all make mistakes. Is this a reasonable response to a mistake? The answer I've got a business to run can be EASILY answered with Does that mean that you think it will be more profitable to pay to train someone else for this position than to let me continue working? But with terminate-at-will, you have an up-hill climb without them applying common sense to the situation.
