Question:

i have a 115/230 volt motor and i need to run it off a battery?

need to know how many 12 volt batteries it will take to run the motor

Answer:

The inverter is the most easily implemented and usually least costly solution. As as informational note in large power applications a motor generator consisting of a dc machine coupled to a synchronous ac machine is used as it is more efficient and produces a cleaner ac waveform than an inverter. it has huge first and maintenance costs, however, which make it impractical for small to moderate sized applications.
Unless the motor is one designed to run on AC or DC, you will need one of the other suggestions made re inverters or genemotor sets Otherwise 10 - 12V. batteries, or 20 if set for 230V.
Install an inverter to convert your 12 volts DC to Ac and connect a 12v/115 vots AC transformer.Connect an additional battery in paralllel if the motor rating requires its addition
One battery. Your motor is an AC motor, but batteries put out DC. So you will need an inverter to convert 12 volts DC to 120 volts AC. Figure out how many watts of power the motor needs - volts times amps equals watts - and this will tell you what size inverter you need. They can be bought at your local Walmart.
