the copper drain is attached to 3 inch pvc drain pipeI would like to take the portion of bad copper out and reattach to an existing part of the good portion of copper pipe, at least for the time being.I need to know if I can do a simple fix my self.looking for some new ideas
You have a 3 copper drain? on what ? I would like to know what it is for to be able to tell you what to do . Three inch pipe is used as a main or a vent and rarely is used for any drains in plumbing . It is used for area drains but never copper pipe or rarely if ever .
A 3 copper drain is about as rare as hen's teeth. I fabbed up a drain out of 1.5 copper for a commercial kitchen steamer, but that was because PVC would melt in service in that instance. 3 is damned expensive and not something you usually see invested on such a low-threshold application as a drain. Cut out the damaged portion and install PVC. You can make the connection with Fernco fittings, or solder an adapter to the copper and thread onto that. NOTE: I STRONGLY doubt you will find 3 fittings at Home Depot to solder to copper, so bear in mind you may be going to a plumbing-specific supplier for what you need if you decide to go with the adapter.
