I have a dilly bread recipe that calls for an 8in souffle pan but I cannot find one anywhere online!?

2 questions:1) Does it mean 8in high or 8in in diameter? I remember when my grandmother made it, the slices were really big so I am thinking 8in high.2) If I can't find a souffle dish, what can I use instead?

Pan sizes are usually given according to the diameterSouffle` rises high as it bakes, so that's why your grandmother's souffle` slices were highAll you really need is a round eight-inch casserole dishI had a souffle dish years ago, and that was essentially what it was Corningware makes souffle` dishesThey also make casserole dishes which are very similarThe difference is that the souffle` dishes have a sort of lip at the rimIf the bread is supposed to rise very high as it bakes, make a little collar for the casserole dish out of aluminum foilFold the foil a couple of times till it's about six inches high and whatever length you choseTie it around the dish at the top using twineAnother thing you can do is to bake the bread in a clean metal coffee can which is eight inches in diameter, or in a clean, never-used flowerpot of the right diameter (put a piece of foil over the hole from the inside)Both of those were popular in years gone byFlowerpot bread was a popular gift at one time.
