Question:

I have a leaking copper radiator pipe in my boiler heating system.?

It is in the basement zone of my system. I have separate return shutoff‘s for all zones. My system has copper pipes with small but long copper/aluminum baseboard radiators. I would like to know if I can isolate the section and sweat in a new section without draining the entire heating zone/system. I was told I can use dry ice to isolate the section and then fix the leak. If so, I need advice as to handling the dry ice and application to the pipes. My house is app. 3400 sq/ft and I do not want to have to refill the system with antifreeze if I don‘t have to. Thank you.

Answer:

jsf73, other than draining the entire system, plumbing companies do have a pipe freeze machine that freezes a section of pipe in order to make repairs on a system. you can look and research companies advertising pipe freeze capabilities. this apparatus will isolate your system and facilitate repairs.
I've never heard of the dry ice trick it would be interesting to see if it actually worked. I'm sorry to say unless you can isolate the water out of that pipe you will have to drain the zone.
