I bought a Eureka Boss SmartVac for $148 from Sears' last year. It uses bags (which I now think is cleaner than the bagless kind...then you don't have to breathe in dust mites when you empty the bin.) I have 2 Ragdoll cats....they shed like crazy. I have tried many....many vacuums over the years, and this is truly the vacuum I swear by. And the attachments on this one are awesome too. It has a power paw attachment for the stairs. I had been using a hand-held vac to do steps (and though convenient, those hand-held models just don't have the power of an upright!) My mother-in-law (who doesn't care for cats) remarks on how nice our carpets look every time she comes over. I think that really seals the deal for me. And the attachments on this one are awesome too.
I work in a vacuum repair/sales shop and I have a few suggestions... first, in my opinion, if pet hair carpet 'fur' is am issuse, do no go bagless. The filters tend to clog up and the suction then drops off. As for the claims of brands that they do not clog, I would need to see it to believe it. 60% of all repairs I do are clogs in one form or another. the biggest problem with the Dysan is that the parts are very hard to get. therefore, expensive to fix. Dirt Devil makes a good machine, but for my mone, Panasonic is the way to go. I personally own two. Your other choice is a canister vac. They are a little more money, but are easier to move around.
I also work for a vacuum shop, and I would agree with the other person above about not going bagless. The hair will definitly clog the filters faster and makes for a real dirty mess. I honestly think it will be hard to find a good quality vacuum in that price range that will last. All vacuums are stong and pick up at first. The Dyson is horrible, simply put. Very heavy, clog often and noone wants to repair them. The Dirt Devil company has made better vacuums as of late, but I would would recommend a Sanitaire vacuum which will give you more longevity and eventually you will want to get a canister. Sanitaire vacuums are made for commercal use, but can be used in residential settings and are very strong and just above your price range.
