Question:

I'm looking for a waterproofing membrane that DOESN'T contain Petroleum!?

I'm looking to install a vapor barrier in a crawl space, but I can not use the normal polyethylene plastic sheeting due to the fact that the homeowner is allergic to petroleum! Any suggestions?

Answer:

Lay it on a flat surface and hammer it flat.
Heat it until it melts and pour into the shape you want.
It is just aluminum, it bendsTry working it back and forth over the edge of your bench or tableWear gloves so you dont cut yourself.
Use a METAL IRONhahaha You have to bend it in an opposite direction to the current curve and then some beyond the original diameter for it to maintain its shapeRoll it up against the curve as tight as you CAN, and then straighten it outYou could also use brute force : Place it on a flat hard surface like a 10mm metal plate, heat it up with a blowtorch and place another flat surface over it - then strike it a few times hard with a 5 pound hammerIf this doesn't sort it out, you could always try setting up an elaborate set of rubber rollers that would run it in a sequential loop which would strain in in the opposite directionHonestly I think you should try using your clothes iron on the ironing boardJust put it on max heat and press real hard.
How about aluminum foil (or paper-aluminum foil laminate), parchment, Kraft paper/fiberglass laminate, exterior grade plywood (caulked of course)There are of course vapor barrier grade paints, like Benjamin Moore Moorecraft paintThe paint is a latex, so perhaps the allergy won't be affected by itConsidering that just about everything we come in contact with in modern life has some petroleum byproduct in it, the only place this guy can live without aggravating his petroleum allergy is a cave!
