Question:

I'm moving into my first apartment, should I have a housewarming party?

I'm in my last year of college and I'm moving into my first apartment should I through a housewarming party? I'm not expecting gifts (but they would be appreciated broke college student and all)

Answer:

Yes! By all means!! If you would feel more comfortable, ask a good friend or family member to have it for you (they would do the inviting so it doesn't look like you're asking for gifts)I threw one for my daughter's first aptand asked everyone to bring a 'gift' valued at $5.00 or under! it was kind of like a gadget party.there are TONS of things you need that you don't think about when you first move out.like scissors, can openers, strainers, aspirin, band-aids, cleaning supplies, basic stock items.etcshe received things like toilet paper, aluminum foil, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, wooden spoons, rubber gloves for cleaning, spatulas, toilet brushes, spices, canned goods, sponges and scrub pads, refrigerator bowls w/lids, mini sewing box w/needles assorted threads for quick repairs, windex, pens and paper, even postage stamps and batteries! all things you don't think about til you NEED them! most kids (when they move out) just think about the big things, like furniture, so this was perfect! it was a lot of fun and people got very creative without spending a fortune! And best of all you don't have to feel weird about asking people to 'bring a gift'Like in my daughters case, i invited all her girlfriends, all young girls in school or with young children and they didn't have much money.so it worked out well! Hope this helps and good luck in your new venture!
