What can I put on the two walls that have the cement backer board? Is there only certain things that I can put on them. They are about 3 ft. away from the stove. What is the code for this. I am at a loss, but I need to do something about this. Anyone know about wood stove codes. Thanks...
Ours has those fake bricks as a wall behind it, and a brick base for the woodburner to set on. Sounds like the distance from the wall is pretty standard, about the same for ours. The Red brick finishing looks pretty good.
Codes are local, usually by county. Requirements can usually be gotten for free from your county planning office. You'll most likely be able to use a clay-based tile. You local codes will decide if you have to use a high-heat mortar or not, it's always best to check before starting work. Good luck!
Fireplace shops sell different types of wall boards than meet most building codes. Try to find a dealer that sells your brand of wood stove. They should have access to manufacturers recommendations on safety clearances. You might also get the information on line. Give them the model of your wood stove.
In WA state, with a *certified* wood stove, the clearence is anywhere from 18 to 24 inches. You can put anything non-combustable on that wall... tile, rock, brick, Z brick, or metal plating with 1 air space from backer board. You could always check with the court house to find out what your local building codes are.
You need to check with your local codes for options and requirements. I would say that whatever material you use , it needs to be fire retardant. Perhaps a stone tile, or extend the ceramic floor tiles onto the wall. Is the flue for the stove going into the wall, or does it go up into the ceiling. That will also impact your choices of materials
