I tried painting my metal front door and the paint wont stick at all. Why?

Answer:

the others offer good advice, but they left out a critical step. sanding. sand the entire door with 220 sandpaper. the tiny scratches give the primer something to grab on to.
Not only try the metal primer but some metal doors have the equivelant to a teflon coating, like on baking sheets. depends on the brand.
You'll need to use an oil-based primer and oil-based top coat using a small foam roller. I think oil based paint and primer are the way to go for a metal door. Hope this helps
You need to apply a coat of metal primer first. Ordinary exterior paint is not suitable for priming. Red lead is one of the best metal primers, and the entire door needs to be given a coat of it. After the priming coat is dry, put on the finishing coat. This can be any good exterior paint.
just use KILZ primer. and you never put oil base paint on a metal door. it tells you that on the door when you buy it. but you can use the oil base kilz or latex base. the paint has to be latex. good luck
