If a VCR is really dusty outside, what are the chances its damaged or needs cleaning inside?

My parents old VCR finally bit the dust after all these years. They really want to find another.My BF and I have one that we NEVER use, but it is EXTREMELY dusty since it came from his old house where his mom smoked and never dusted anything. How do I properly clean both outside and inside of this VCR so I can give it to my parents? I wonder if its even worth it, or should I just go buy a new one.
