If they were face down, then got attacked and destroyed, do their effects activate? Why?/Why not? First of all they are smoke alarms not a fire alarm a fire alarm is in a commercial building like a school. As for your question I would just replace them all they are no longer reliable and you may become used to the so called false alarms until its too late or remove them and not reinstall them. Malfunctions like this also waste the fire departments time and could endanger other life and property.
