Question:

Ignition Lockout' light on my Gas Fired central heating Boiler keeps coming on...?

Hi - I'm a newbie so please be patient ! - My Gas Fired central heating Boiler (I have a HALSTEAD 60 type boiler installed) has a knob on it that I can set to off or from levels 1 through to 6. I have no idea what this knob's function is. I do know however, that located above this knob, there is a light that keeps coming on, and once it comes on, the boiler stops firing. I then usually leave the heating off for some time and twiddle the knob and turn on and off the electrical power to the Boiler and subsequently will usually get the Boiler to fire again when I hit the Manual Reset button that is located over the aforementioned 'knob'. I have checked the thermostat (which is located in the hallway) and I know that it's working fine because when the Boiler IS firing, I can turn it off or on by adjusting the thermostat accordingly. How can I get rid of the problemI have with the boiler 'cutting out' and the subsequent ignition lockout light coming on ?? Thank you !!

Answer:

Boiler Ignition Lockout
Here is my stab at your problem. The 1-6 knob I am not positive about, but it may be a water temperature switch? I don't know. The real problem you have is ignition lockout. The boiler actually fires so you have gas and ignition means (pilot, hot surface, or spark). My guess is you are not proving the flame. The burners light and a flame sensor will tell your gas valve that the burner lit and keep flowing gas to the burners. If the flame switch doesn't prove flame then the gas will shut off so it doesn't pour gas into the chamber with no fire (safety). Without seeing your boiler it is hard to guess what kind of ignition system you currently have. I will give you a general description of a falme sensor. It will usually have a wire coming off the bottom and it will be a metal rod either straight or bent and it should extend into the space where the fire leaves the burner. If you remove the sensor and clean it with a piece of sandpaper it should take care of that problem, if not then it could be an ignition control board problem.
It is overflowing because the boiler is Priming, and blowing excess water into the expansion tank.. This could be due too high a setting on the Circulating pump, or lack of water in the heating system. You also have 2 motorised valves in the system which are usually located near the hot copper storage cylinder. Check that the valves are opening when heating, or hot water is neded.. You can check the valves by Placing your hands on either side of the valve when Heating is running. Both sides of the valve should be the same temperature. If it is not, then the valve is faulty, and possibly in the closed position. To make a temporary repair, Remove the motor by unscrewing the scews holding it down, then lift it off. You will see a spindle which you can turn with a pair of pliers to open it. There is no need to drain any water in doing this. If it all works then without priming, you only need to replace the motor for a new one. You do not have to purchase the complete valve. You can get one from a Plumbers mrechant.
seems like you got a moisture problem in the fuel you might want to call a heat and air man to check it for you
