Typically, a pair of solid metal eye pieces about the same size and shape as what is worn in tanning beds is used when lasers are applied to the face. This is different than the sunglasses-like thing you wear during treatment of other body areas. Even with this metal piece completely shielding your eyes, you are still going to see light. This is because when the laser hits your skin, much of the energy is diffracted and reflected around in your internal tissues. This is just like what happens when you hold your fingers in front of a flash light : your fingers appear to glow red because some of the light passes through. In the case of lasering your face, this indirect light reaches your eyeballs from the sides, and you are able to perceive a flash of light. This light flash, however, is very different from the original laser light. Most importantly, it is of much lower power and highly diffracted and incoherent. Because it does not passes through the sides of your eyeball, it is not focused by your eye's lens on to the back of your eyeball (the retina) where it would cause burns. You can achieve the same effect by holding a very strong flashlight up to your temple with your eyes closed. When you turn the flashlight on and off, you can perceive the light, even if you occlude your eyeballs with something totally opaque.
