hello, I thought Id brighten up my house by removing cleaning all the internal door handles. they are old fashioned, lever type, quite a heavy metal. I dont think theyre brass since they are very dark in colour. how can I: 1) clean them and then, could I possibly 2) paint them? a different, and bright colour? any help appreciated, thanks.

Since you are going to repaint them anyway: warm water with Pine Sol or Spc N Span or .... brush wash. After dry, apply them onto a cardboard (fasten underneath of cardboard with the screws, etc..) so the handles are not laying down. Go to an actual paint store and get a quality spray paint that is meant for metal. Spray light coat, dry, spray light coat, dry. Perferably 3 coats since it is an object that will have a lot of use. Check with the store about a top coat if possible.
