Question:

Is anyone familiar with a fuel cell is this the same as a gas tank?

I have this summit racing catalog that comes to my house, its mainly for performance parts, but I noticed something called a fuel cell, is this just a glorified gas tank, do they work any different, are ttere any advantages to using them. The reason I ask is because I may need to replace my fuel tanks and would like to see if I can use one of these, I do not have a high perfromance vehicle, but the prices are pretty good so I was considering buying one.

Answer:

A fuel cell is an electrochemical conversion device. It produces electricity from fuel (on the anode side) and an oxidant (on the cathode side), which react in the presence of an electrolyte.
Fuel cells are designed for 'race' cars, they are usually mounted in the trunk but can be fabbed to fit anywhere. Also designed better for accidents and rollovers. You most likely do not need one. But if your looking for a project, go for it. You may also need new fuel lines and a pump.
yes a fuel cell is also the gas tank i have a 8 gal fuel cell in my 86 gmc s15 drag truck, you can use as a replacment for your gas tank but the fuel cell will not work in the stock location with out modifications to your location most fuel cells go in the trunk or beds.
Yeah, they are kinda like glorified gas tanks, but theyre designed for specific uses. First off, they take up your trunk usally. Second off, theyre designed for high performance race vehicles. Theyre safer in the kinda accidents that racecars get into. They also have weight distribution advantages, larger capacities, and a number of other things, none of which are worthwhile on a street car. Why would you need to replace your fuel tank? theyre usually designed for life.
a direct replacement fuel tank is what you need. don't be duped by the price of the cell, you need additional money for modification, fabrication, re-routing, and making it street legal. fuel cells are for racing applications where a foam filled container meeting nhra specs is required. they are equiped with fittings for high performance fuel lines, and usually don't come equipped with fuel pumps for fuel level senders. let me know if you need any help
