I bought this 1 ounce Copper coin and it doesn't even have a face value even a penny has a face value of 1 cent,If you look at a copper penny in a bowl compared to most other coins/metals it looks so pathetic, corroded as if it going to disintegrate away, there are some metals that you can weld and the fusion process works well, but if one tries to weld on copper it basically blows up. Yes I know it is supposedly useful for plumbing but even there Im skeptical about health because of the intense corrosion that takes place when its combines with water and other liquids.Just wondering if anyone knows any true value for this metal or is it as worthless as I think it is?? Thanks in advance =]
I love copper, but then I'm an electronic engineer. You don't have to weld it, it solders beautifully, can be chemically etched to make printed circuit boards, conducts electricity beautifully and conducts heat beautifully. The closest alternative for electrics and electronics would probably be silver, and that would make all electrical and electronic devices a lot more expensive. And all those shiny silver coins are actually about 75% copper.
copper is somewhat valuable but a penny's worth is not much to worry about. people steal it all the time for it's value. now if you had a lot of pennies...
Copper's value has been increasing. It costs nearly two cents to create a copper penny today....and very little copper is used in a penny now because it would become too costly. Most of a modern penny is zinc (around 95% zinc as I recall). Copper has become so valuable that in Southern CA I hear of people stealing copper plumbing out of construction sites. People are even stealing thousands of feet of copper wire out of the lighting alongside freeways. Right now copper is worth about four times what aluminum, lead, and zinc are worth.
Copper is an excellent conductor of electricity, so it is used extensively in the electronics industry. Plus, copper gutters last a real long time, and look real nice on a home. Also, since copper is a real good conductor of heat, it makes for excellent cooking utensils. Hope that helps!
