Question:

Is it a good idea to replace the gang meter socket when replacing the main electric service panel?

The gang meter socket is not rusty/rusted out but the main power has to be cut to the building already. I‘m presently replacing an old Federal Pacific (fire-hazard/dangerous) main electric service panel. Is there a certain brand that is better than another ex.siemens vs. murray.

Answer:

It really isn't necessary. Meter bases can last a life time. My only concern is it's rating. If it's rated for 100 amps and you're upgrading to 200 amps, then yes, definitely change it. I would personally like to thank you for replacing your FP panel. I'm sure I speak for every electrician out there! As for specific brands, yes. Many feel that copper bus bars are top off the line (ie. Square D QO, Cutler/Hamer CH). But Square D HOMELINE is a decent panel, as is SIEMENS ITE. MURRAY and THOMAS AND BETTS are on the low side, but just because they are big and bulky and hard to work in (ergonomically speaking). Hope this helps.
I would the it is all new. The jaws inside get tired so to speak. fairly cheap too. Apples and oranges on brand.
