Question:

Is it harmful to cook with plastic utensils?

It is well-publicized that it is harmful to heat food in the microwave in plastic containers, or to leave plastic water bottles in the car on hot days because of the cancer-causing chemicals in many plastics. So, I was wondering, might it be bad to use plastic spatulas or spoons when cooking? Should I only use wood or metal cooking utensils?

Answer:

Plastic Cooking Utensils
We never really use plastic to cook anyway... for me they always melted and kinda warped shape. As for the chemicals, no I don't think your really putting yourself in danger. Most are coated with a type of teflon so it wont stick. Wood utensils kinda suck, in my opinion. Everything sticks to them. And metal ones scratch pans. Its a personal choice, no I dont think they will cause any harm whichever one you use.
I use a plastic spatula in my one and only non-stick skillet. Other wise I use a metal spatula. I have several plastic spoons. I love them. I've been cooking with them since the 70's. My whole family is still around. I also have a couple of wooden spoons. I like them too. Use what you like.
It is NOT well publicized, it is a myth except for microwaving plastic wrap. If they're heatproof, plastic utensils are fine.
Depends on the content of the plastic. Some plastics are not meant for heating food and can leach unpleasant things into food when heated. Other plastics are designed for cooking and high temperatures and are just fine to use. Think about it...most microwaveable entrees these days come in plastic trays to be heated from the frozen or shelf-stable state. Basically, if the item wasn't designed to be used with heat or says not to be heated (or re-heated) then don't. Most of my kitchen utensils are plastic...spatula, ladle, tongs, slotted spoon, etc.
