Question:

Is it possible to dye a microfiber sofa?

We bought a sofa about a year ago. We love it and it is still in excellent shape however, we are regretting the light tan color we picked. Not such a great choice since we have a 2 year old. Is it possible to dye it a darker color? Is this something we could do ourselves?

Answer:

No, you can't dye a microfiber sofa, but you can make slipcovers for it, or reupholster it with a darker fabric. There are several problems with trying to dye upholstered furniture. One is that dyeing synthetic microfiber requires that you boil it with a special kind of dye. You can't exactly boil the fabric that's on your sofa! Another problem is that excess dye must be rinsed out thoroughly; people who try dyeing upholstered furniture then find that the dye rubs off on the clothing of anyone unwise enough to sit on it. It is possible to use fabric paint, instead of dye, but it's a lot of trouble, and the fabric paint costs as much as having the sofa recovered. Fabric paint wears off very quickly compared to dye, since it sits on the surface of the fabric, so it's not a very long-term solution.
