I hope not, it seems like I'm vacuuming up pennies all the time! I don't do it on purpose, but I sure know that noise...they have a very distinct noise when sucked into the vacuum.
in a worse case scenario yes - but you'd hear it immediately - it can puncture through the collector bag, and jam in the fan, and cause the motor to heat up and either break, or start a fire if the gears slip. it would make a really loud noise, and most newer hoovers have a safety cut out
Its possible, but about as likely as winning the lottery twice in a day. The material you pick up is irrelevant anything that jams the motor can cause the motor to overhaet and if you just stare at it for a while there is the remote possibility that the motor will heat up enough to combust the material around it. Ie flammable dust, lint, etc...
If the metal is hitting against metal as it is being sucked into your vacuum cleaner, then it could cause a spark would could cause a fire. This used to be a problem with the older types of vacuum cleaners because they had a lot of metal as part of their makeup, but plastics have replaced most formerly metal components, so there is little chance of that happening anymore.
