Question:

Is mortar the same thing as cement?

Is mortar the same thing as cement?

Answer:

Home Depot and Lowes carry the DIY Thinsets in white and gray. Make sure if you purchase thinset, it is a fortified thinset and just requires water. Some thinsets are quick setting and some require a polymer additive. You should get aproximatly 90 square feet coverage from a 25 pound bag. You can get premixed thinset ready to use for small repairs. Look in the flooring department of your local Home Depot or Lowes.
Cement is a gray powder. Mix is with water and sand and get mortar.
yes it is. Portland cement mortar, often known simply as cement mortar, is created by mixing Portland cement with sand and water. Portland cement mixed with sand and larger aggregate becomes concrete.

Cement(often called Portland cement)is a combination of limestone(calcium carbonate)and silica alumina, iron oxide and magnesia. When mixed with water and sand a chemical process called hydration takes place where the water combines with the cement and hardens, excess water evaporates. The addition off aggregates makes concrete. So cement is if you like, the glue.Mixing sand, cement and water gives you mortar, which is used for stone, brick or block building. The terms are not interchangeable but are often miss used.Local dialects or colloquial terms just confuse it even more.It is possible to mix water and cement only, but this gives a very hard end result, almost like granite,NOT suitable for building, but can be used as grout for pouring into cracks.Appologies for the long winded response, but it seems that every other day i have to deal with some well intentioned amatures attempt at repair using just cement and water, itreallyset hard.
