Question:

Is my old Weil Mclain oil boiler with tankless worth anything (NJ)?

I have a 120k BTU Weil Mclain Gold hydronic boiler, with tankless domestic coil installed, about 84 AFUE - I think a model SGO something, guessing it's between 8 and 12 years old, one of the pale yellow units. It works but we're converting to gas. Is there a market for a used oil boiler in Central NJ, and how much would you guess it could sell for? Thanks.

Answer:

The thing is, most people who need a boiler hire someone to install it because it is a pretty hard-core job for the average do-it-your-selfer. Since they are putting a lot of money into the job for labor, they usually get a brand new unit (rather than risk getting a used one that could fail at any time and probably not have any warrantee). Also, a lot of the tradesmen don't like to put in used equipment as, it is hard to predict how much life it has left, fittings 'n things are often rusted solid makes the job take longer and, if something busts/goes wrong, it never ends well. The person who would be interested in it would probably be someone who would do the work themselves, and, if they are doing it themselves, it is probably because they don't have a lot of money. If it was a hot air furnace, somebody might buy it for a workshop/camp (because they don't have to worry about heating pipes freezing when not in use). Where I live, you would be lucky if you can get somebody to take it for free for the scrap value.
