Question:

Is Recycled (smelted) Iron poorer quality than that from Mined Ore? In stoves for example.?

I am choosing a wood burning stove for a house in Ireland. One manufacturer mentions their stoves are made from Mined Ore only and that this is better quality than recycled or resmelted Iron. Is this is valid claim. None of the other manufacturers mention this.

Answer:

It depends on the source of the recycled metal. While true that the auto industry use's a large volume of recycled materials now, they didn't always have good sources. They do now, but they paid a price in the early 80's for sub-standard metals. If the recycle source is sound, I wouldn't worry about the stove, but if your unsure, go with the stove made of virgin metals.
That really isn't true. Autos have a large recycled content. It depends on the quality of the recycler.
I think it is. I knew a blade smith and he would not use recycled metal. said it was inferior metal.
