I m wondering if there s a Neutral Wire in this picture (yes I turned off the breaker to get this photo). I want to put in a quot;Smart Light Switchand they require a Neutral Wire. I ll have an electrician do the work, but want to make sure the wire exists first.
the neutral wire is white and connected to the silver screw ,,, the darker screw is hot ,,, the yellow wire is the wrong colour as it appears to be hot as well ( should be red or black not yellow )
It's hard to tell from the switch and the color of the wires, but you also have an outlet in the same box as the switch. The outlet will have a neutral and, if it's on the same circuit, you should be able to use that.
Yes there is a neutral wire, what is missing is the grounding conductor. That is also required for the smart devices to work. That would be a bare wire or a green wire. Good luck to you.
The wiring appears illegal The wire connected to the 2 black wires appears to be a bare copper wire. If this is the case, it is illegal and very dangerous. The bare wire is a ground wire. Someone use a 2 wire cable with ground in place of a 3 wire cable with ground. It appears they used the ground wire to supply electricity to the switch and receptacle. Use the common (Neutral) wire on the receptacle. A good qualified electrician will not use that wiring and will insist on correcting it. If the ground is being used as a current carrying conductor as it appears; this is not only a shock hazard but also a fire hazard. Have a licensed qualified insured electrician check this as soon as possible.
The neutral is the white wire on the receptacle.
