Answer:

There is a fitting called lead loc, you need to know which size of lead pipe, you will get away with it doing diy but us proffessionals wont.
I am sure you don't have lead water pipes, but probably galvanized iron pipes. Any plumbing supply store will have a dielectric union. It will thread onto your G.I. water pipe and have either threads or a sweat fitting for the copper. A dielectric union isolates the two metals so they do not come in contact with each other. If you fastened the copper directly to the GI it would corrode over time.
It can be a DIY job. What you need to do is to get a rubber boot with two hose clamps on it and attach one end to the lead and the other to the copper. However, if this is on the water supply to the house, I would rip out the lead and go copper all the way - that might not be a DIY job.
