When i was messaging friends i thought to try out my dads keyboard on his computer, and it worked fine. And yes, i am pritty sure you can use keyboards for games, but the game itself must be configured for keyboards. For instance, a game like Skyrim would obviously be able to use a keyboard, as it is also a computer game. But! Be warned, some keyboards/mouses can take too much power from the ps3 and ruin it. And if this happens and you used a accesory NOT recommended by Sony then they will not fix the problem for you. Mostly i am talking about giant keyboards that are used for gaming on the PC, so you should'nt worry too much.
