Question:

Kitchen dishes kept in cupboard with smelly sofa cover, safe to use?

I just moved in a new houseshare and my housemates don't seem very hygienic. The first thing I noticed is that they had kept all the kitchen dishes such as oven dish and cake tins in a cupboard stuffed with the sofa covers, that smell like they have been in there for a very long timeIs it still safe to use all these dishes or could they be tinted with mould?

Answer:

Just wash the dishes I'm sure they will be fine.
The smell of couch covers is not dangerous. If you're paranoid, rinse them before you use them If they were moldy, which it sounds like they're not, even that wouldn't affect the utensils, unless the mold was on them too.
As in glass or ceramic? A lot of hot water, some dish soap, some elbow grease and a drip dry and they should be good as new. You could always run them threw a dish washer if you have one. I can't say with plastic. Not my area of expertise.
I would take all items out of the cupboards and if you have a dish washer use that if not use hot soapy water with a little bleach in it . you need to wash the cupboards out inside as well keep other items out of the kitchen except what you use in there.
get every thing out of cupboard , throw away sofa covers if they are no good, wipe out the cupboard with a hot cloth soapy water then wipe dry. soak the plates in very hot water, when water has cooled a little give them a good scrub with a scourer. Even give oven ware a clean if needed, if you have plastic stuff best to buy new ones take it with you when you move again Then arrange plates in one pile oven ware in another in cupboard. Hope that helps you
