Knob and tube is widely used here in West Virginia and in many other places with older homesI replace it all the timeI am an electrician and a residential building contractorIt IS really a fire hazardThe wire is aluminum and is always undersized for the amount of current that passes through itI have actually been burned by it after it was off for a minuteThe worst problem with it is that people replace their old service panels with newer models and don't upgrade the wire tooThe insulation on the wire falls apart leaving bared wiresThey are aluminum wires and most of the new outlets are made to be used with copper wires so the dissimilar metals pose more problems as time goes by.
