I was looking for a simple to use lacquer or coating of some sort to put on copper pipe to keep it from tarnishing from continued contact with people‘s hands. Any suggestions are welcome.

Clear polyurethane would work well to preserve the appearance of the copper. You first need to clean the pipe. This can be done with a rubdown of rubbing alcohol, followed by a rubdown of vinegar, followed by a rinse, ten minutes later. Make sure you get all the vinegar off the pipe, otherwise the polyurethane might not stick correctly. You will need to sand the pipe lightly with 120 or 220 grit sandpaper to give the polyurethane a tooth to stick to. Be careful applying the polyurethane so you don't get drips on the bottom. Two or three thin coats should do the job.
