hi does i am building a land yacht and need some information on sail rigs that other land yachts have. i need to know things like what material is the sail made out of? why is it in that shape? where is it hoisted from? where is the mast stepped? does the sail configuration work well into the wind? does it work well down wind?. if any one has any links to where i could find this info or know about any of this please tell. i am looking or about 5 to 6 different types of sail rigs.
I can help a little. Land yachts of the 1880's had thick canvas sails. today sails are made of Dacron or in some cases Kevlar. The shape of the sails are much like an airfoil, and are designed to use the force of the wind to get the greatest push (resultant force). You can hoist it from the mast base or rig pulley's to the front. The mast is usually near the pivot point of the front axle. No sails on land yachts don't work at all into the wind. Only a little better down wind. it's when the wind is from the side that the highest R' is achieved. i don't think there sre many ways to do this, and I don't know what would work best. Maybe a library would be a good bet. Good Luck!
