Question:

Making a Helmholtz Resonator?

Actually I have to make two of them:(But the good thing is I have 4-5 weeks to make themOne has to be made from steel, and the other has to be made from either aluminum or brass (I'd prefer aluminum)The dimensions of the actual resonator is what creates the different frequencies (I'm guessing its the ratio of the different parts)the different dimensions are:D Diameter of based diameter of neckH height of basel height of neckThe air within the base acts as the spring, while the air in the neck acts as the massBasically, my question is to just ask for a launching pointI'm not sure how I am supposed to craft these things from metal without machining equipment???I would like to receive some basic information about these resonators, guides or information as to how to craft them, and any other information you feel could be helpfulLinks or just information in general will help! Thanks!

Answer:

A Helmholtz resonator is a simple device which can trap air waves and amplify them as standing wavesThis technique was actually known to the ancient builders of megalithic structuresEssentially it consists of a cavity connecting with two smaller passages which allow the air-waves and air-flow to enter and leave the chamberSome musical instruments from Asia are fashioned from gourds which allow them this type of geometryIn this event the musical instrument becomes a HresonatorYou could make one using two steel cans left over from ther kitchen wasteOne end will be open while the biottom of the can is closedMake a small hole in the bottoms of the cans and to these holes fasten a length of pipeThe pipes can be made of copper or aluminium, or plastic and can be bought at a hardware shop, etcYou can tape (duct tape) them or solder them to the base of the canYou can also use caulking compound, whichever comes easiestWhen this is done you can then simply tape the two cans together so that a space is enclosed Plastic pipes can be scavenged from a toy or other item found in a dollar shop.
