Question:

Measuring for a a western show saddle?

I will be going to a tack sale this weekend and intend to buy a western saddle for my new horse. Hes a slightly chubby spanish mustang. He has little withersalmost none. I have no idea how to measure for a western saddle and i have no way to get my horse to a tack place to fit him for one, and i cannot afford the cost of them coming to my horse. How do i measure one for him? or should i just get the double quarter horse bars just in case? The english saddle i have for him is a wide and fits him perfectly.

Answer:

What's his English saddle size? Wide isn't necessarily an answer. Someone might be able to convert English size to Western size on here? I myself don't know much about English. Just ask if you can try out the saddles and whichever fits best I suppose.
Measure the underside front of your english saddle, from where the button is to where the button is, and try to find that same measurement in a western saddle. Take a tape measure with you. Good luck.
If you do not have the option to take the horse with you, get some heavy copper wire and form it over the horse at the wither and down both sides. Lay the wire on a piece of cardboard and trace the wire then cut out the top portion leaving a replica of his back and put that under the saddle to see if it fits. There is no such thing as double Quarter Horse Bars. There is full QH bars, Semi QH Bars, and Draft size bars.If your horse has wide shoulders he should take a saddle with Full Quarter Horse Bars.
