Question:

melting iron ore at home?

Hi, on a vacation to alabama, i found some iron ore at a relatives house. i went back home to washington(state) and i want to melt it now, how do i do that?Note: the best source of heat i have is a propane torch used to burn weeds

Answer:

well below freezing or in freezing the temperature will make it cold then it stays if above freezing it will get warm then it loses the coldness just make it be in good temperature
natural wuesatite FeO melts about1369 c natural hematite Fe2O3 melts at 1563 c Most other iron ore about the same: A propane torch is not hot enough, even mixed with coke and extra oxygen. The iron ore is typically about half other kinds of rock which is left over after most of the iron is removed. The leftovers are called slag. If I recall another chemical is added to the molten rock limestone perhaps. Neil
Sorry. Higher temp.s than that propane torch can provide are required. What are you trying to do? If you did just melt it, all you'd get is slag anyway.
