One lightning rod is generally regarded as sufficient. It should be the tallest thing in the immediate vicinity, and the ground should be a steel rod driven into the ground a couple of feet, with the cable clamped to it to ensure good contact.
just put them in a trash compactor..
it will save you from replacing everthing plugged into the wall if there is a hit. it must of happend to some past owners. its not a bad thing it just makes the house look creepy. so does lightning ever strike in the same place twice? who knows im sure it has at some time. but the rods can draw the bolts to the house if there is a static build-up near your home. you could take it down and use a good surge protector. they didnt have those back in the day. good luck
THE LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO DIVERT THE STRIKE TO GROUND (sorry bout caps). it doesn't stop the hit, only gives it a path of least resistance (and hopefully, damage) to ground. as long as the cable is good, and of sufficient size, and all connections are tight you should be ok.
