Question:

Need help with math question using [ ] brackets.?

Hi. I need some help with a math problem. Here it is:5+2(x+3)2[5-4(x+2)] I don't understand what the [ ] brackets mean. Can you help me? I have an answer key so I'm not looking for an easy answer, just need to master the concepts.

Answer:

The [ ] brackets are there because of the (x + 2) so you do 4(x + 2) then take that away from the 5 so you know what to times by 2. Hope this makes sense I'm only 13 so sorry if I got it wrong
5 + 2(x + 3) 2[5 - 4(x + 2)] 5 + 2x + 6 2[5 - 4x - 8] 11 + 2x 2(-4x - 3) 11 + 2x -8x - 6 8x + 2x -6 -11 10x -17 x -17/10 or -1 7/10
The [ ] brackets are used just to show you what order you do the equation just like the ( ) parenthesis. First you do the things in the parenthesis, then the brackets and then sometimes after the brackets you do the things in { } next.
