Hi. We adopted our1st cat today. Male tabby. 4yrs old. He was really affectinate when we first let him into our home today at 3pm but since 4pm he has hid under our recliner sofa and I can only hear him licking his lips every now and then. I am worried he may wet himself or starve. Is this normal? We have a very quiet house and am giving him space.
Normal my cat did this too. Just put some food a little under the chair. Thats what i did and my cat came right out! but remeber dont force it come out it'll make it scared. But for the fact it's normal for it be a little sobby and slow :D By the next3 days that cat will be loving you (: Mine started purring the first 4 days.
Ours didn't come out for 3 days. Now he is the most loving cat. Just give him some time to adjust! Just leave some food and water where he can find it and he will adjust in time.
Actually, he WILL come from behind the sofa. Simply set out the cats food, water and litter dishes in their future permanent spots and ignore the cat. When you go to bed tonight the cat will come out to eat and poop; and then it will go back under the sofa or find another hidey spot. The cat may do this for weeks. Don't put food under the sofa. The cat will not allow itself to starve under there.
Don't worry to much right now. When bringing animals into a new home/ environment, they need some what of an adjustment period. All animals do it differently. Some run around and explore, others hide. Your cat just needs time to settle down. Put food, water and a cat box by the sofa and at night when every things dark and everyones asleep your cat will most likely will come out. In the morning check the food water and litter box and see if you can tell if your cat had come out. If he has, he is fine and he just needs time to adjust. If you don't see anything you might want to try and get him out and move him to a room such as a bathroom, or a small area with no bad hiding places and let him just relax in there for a few days. Go in and pet him, be very calm and make sure he has food water cat box ETC. Then move him to a bigger room and soon you should be able to let him out in the whole house. He is just scared. He wont starve- that would take a few days and by then their survival instincts will kick in and they will come out. They are also very clean animals and will come out and use a litter box (usually) before they go on the floor. Just don't worry to much, this is normal :)
