Outline the steps involved in preparing copper pipe for a straight tubular lapped brazed joint?

Answer:

Big diff. in soldering or brazing. The temp needed to braze is considerably more. Cleaning when brazing is not required, but a lite sanding couldn't hurt. You can use a flux as a temp. indicator.Begin heating the lowest portion of the assembly, as heat rises. The flux will reach a state called popcorn and begin to bubble. When the tube turns red almost translucent apply the brazaloy [b-cup-5] to the area that the torch encompasses Aim the torch at a 90% angle to the tube and favor the rear of the assembly to aid capillary attraction. Keep the torch moving and apply the filler , as the melting point of the tube is only 100% or so more than the filler. Go from 6 to 12 and repeat on the opposite side being sure to remelt the previously applied filler. It is really tricky the first few times.
Beginners tend to concentrate on an area too close to their front wheel, you must lift your observation to as far as you can see and scan from side to side, the more and earlier you can see something the longer you have to anticipate what your action should be. When approaching a corner change to the appropriate gear, look through the corner, if it is a righthander get on the leftside of the lane and vice versa (it will give you more room and time to observe), as you approach the apex note where the edges of the road seem to meet, if that point is moving towards you, the corner is tightening up, and you need to reduce speed, if the point is moving away the corner is opening up and you can think about accelerating. Remember brakes are not an on/off switch it is key to brake progressively and consider that you can reduce the braking and reapply them if you feel you are getting close to the edge of grip.
When passing a truck move to the far side of the adjacent lane and full speed ahead, don't worry about the limit, get in front as soon as possible then slow down. Drive int the areas where car tires go,NOT the center of lane. That's where the cars drip oil and traction is really reduced, you can walk out in the street and look down and see the color difference. Use a clear visor ,not tinted, sun glasses for bright days. Even a light tint is dark at night and you WILL get caught out at night.
If you are using silver solder for refrigeration tubing ( Stay silv) then no prep is required other than sanding the fittings If you are silver soldering near the valves wrap them in a wet rag to protect them from the heat !!! if not they will leak due to melting the rubber gaskets If you are soldering water pipes Sand both piece's then flux both put together apply heat remove heat touch tubing with solder if it melts then move the flame around the joint while applying more solder to draw solder around fitting then wipe the fitting with the flux brush while still hot to ensure that the joint is filled then after it cools a bit wipe the joint with a damp rag to rid the area of excess flux Good luck
