has anyone ever heard of painting a cloth sofas, i could swear i saw this on one of the decorating shows, i'm strapped i have two striped boxed chairs i want to change the color of if you've heard of this helpppppppppppppppppppp
Absolutely not, you wont like it and it would ruin the furniture. My mom just moved into an apartment and money is an issue for us to, but we found a sofa for 300 bucks. And we shopped around for almost 2 months. You could rent to own. Or you could purchase slip covers. Save your money and have them recovered. Where there is a will, there is a way. Personally, I dont come from a family with money so my chosen career is well, risky, but even if I didnt make enough to afford new things, Id have to get another job or something. Money is only an issue when you arent willing to work for it. And yes, you saw it on trading spaces. Hildi was absolutely nuts.
I totally agree with the people who said not to paint your chairs . Only a few fabrics would readily accept paint and then there would be the problem of covering the existing patten so that it didn't show through. Not to mention, the fabric would be stiff and really uncomfortable. I have used the sheet and safety pin method of covering chairs before and it works great, plus, you can take them off to launder them! I know that sheets can be pricey, but thrift stores usually have them for a nominal price.
You have done the right thing by removing the fabric first! Depending on what colour and what type the original fabric is... it can be done. If the fabric is particularly heavy, darkly coloured or patterened I would strongly recomend agaist it because any fabric paints or dyes with a propper consistency to leave you with a normal feelin sofa will be semi-transparent. If you think this wont be an issue, I would suggest silk screen fabric paint (availible at art stores) or a permanant fabric dye (make sure it is deffinatelly permanant and rinse it lots before putting it back on or the colour will rub off!). If you go ahead with this, remember its an item of furnature which is going to get lots of use and contact with your skin, so get a good quality paint/dye, and make sure all the ingreedients are non-toxic! (Blues and oranges have a tendency to use poisonous heavy metals to colour so be aware!)
I must admit--never heard of painting a cloth sofa but there are beautiful slip covers that will solve your decorating dilemma. Suggest Sears or J C Penney department stores.
why not buy slipcovers for them. If that is too costly, you can use sheets; I would get queen or king flat sheets. You could find a nice pattern or get white and dye with rit dye. Put the sheet over the chair, make sure it touches the floor (esp. the front and sides = back will not show) and tuck in between cushions. Accent throw pilliows in another color. Don't fret, you can transform the room for next to nothing. Go to thrift stores, yard sales etc. Good Luck!!!!
