Currently I use 3 sets of plastic bird bowels that clip on to the side of their cage for the food and water for my 4 parakeets. 3 seems to work out great, as i do not want them to start getting territorial over food and begin to fight. The bowls fill with seed husks very soon and the budgies are a little too lazy to dig too far for fresh seed, and it seems that they use their water bowls for defecating in.Lately I've had to leave town for a few days at a time and wanted to upgrade to 'silos' or the gravity fed seed and waterers, so that i wouldn't worry about the keets getting hungry or running out of clean water. If i have 4 parakeets, how many sets of feeders should I get so that they will all get a chance to eat evenly? Is there some kind of crude equation for the number of feeders to the number of birds?(They are two pairs of that helps @ all)
In an emergency recently when my father was hospitalised over a few days and then he passed away...........and 300 miles away...... I had to leave suddenly with no time to make arrangements for the birds and was away for four days. I have 400 show budgies. The aviaries were easy as they are huge and I was able to put a great deal of food and water in there. I had birds in breeding cages that I generally change their seed and water daily. I put large jar feeders ( silo style ) in the cages...........three sets and three sets of water drinkers. The birds did fine with that arrangement. There shouldnt be poop going in birds water......thats usually down to your perch arrangement or choice of drinker. So be very sure it cant get fouled in any way as that will kill them. If you can start now getting them used to new feeder and drinkers do so, as some budgies dont get it and go up to the seed dispensers and try and eat the seed through the sides. Some like the seed dispensers and work it out and others dont, so you may need to have both kinds. For every budgie you have .....have one food an water source for every day you are away. That means if you have 4 birds ............4 seed dispensers and four drinkers for every day you are away.........4 times 3 days for instance is 12 seed dispensers and 12 drinkers. That covers all bases food and water wise...............the only other thing is any accidents they can have while you are gone, like getting caught up on anything. You may have to remove any toys they can get stuck on. Think of the stupidest things a budgie can do and make it safer.
