there are a few ways to light a person and various types of lighting. you can use a hot light and move it around the person until you get the lighting you want. with a hot light you can light from the sides, behind, over head or even directly in front, but for that make sure the lighting is coming from behind the camera so its not in the way. be careful of the position of the lighting because if it is in the path of the camera lens there may be a light flare. you can also use a soft box as well. it diffuses the lights so that they are not as harsh as the hot light. the hot light shows the details, flaws and all. the soft light hides it more while still showing off the facial features. also be careful of where you are standing because if you are in white, you'll be your own reflector. you can use reflectors to bounce like onto the subject. things like a mirror or aluminum foil would be cheap and easy. well good luck
