Question:

Pilot light on my boiler wont light....?

The pilot light on my boiler has gone out. I read the instructions on how to light it, It tells me that the pressure gauge should be 0.7 minimum, mine is 0.6I’ve pressed in the button and then pressed the ignition button , the pilot light then lights but when I release the light just goes out again.I tried turning of the boiler altogether – the pressure gauge goes up past 1 but when I turn it back on again the pressure just goes back down to 0.6

Answer:

you are supposed to hold the button down after you light the pilot for a minute then turn the knob to on position now after you did it right and it wont stay lit then you may have to replace the switch i found another switch for mine off of another water heater onside the road that some one threw away put it on mine worked like a charm the pilot light heats the thermal coupling
Change the thermocouple
The thermocouple is burnt out, if this is a regular occurrence you can have a nickel plated one fitted which will last longer. It is always best to use a Corgi registered engineer to carry out any work on gas appliances.
And why are you asking here? Get a plumber.
You probably aren't holding the priming knob in long enough. All gas boilers have a flame failure detector, which prevents any gas from being released if the burner goes out. The thermocouple sits in the flame. It generates a small electrical current which holds the gas valve open. If the gas meter runs out or the pilot flame blows out, the thermocouple will cool down, the current will stop and the gas valve will shut off. In order to light the pilot burner in the first place, you have to have a way to open the gas valve without the thermkocouple being hot. That is what the priming button is for. If holding in the priming button for over a minute doesn't work, then you probably need a new thermocouple (universal replacements should cost less than a tenner from any plumber's merchant). But think seriously about getting a modern boiler with electronic ignition: you will save a fortune in gas by not having to run a pilot light. And if your boiler is a Glow Worm Combi, it will be using electricity running the fan at half speed all the time just to keep the pilot alight!
